Checking Tyre Pressure

You can find the recommended pressure in your manual or on the inside of your drivers door. It’s best to check the pressure of your tyre when the car is cold. Even the smallest journey can warm up tyres and increase the pressure. Low pressure can cause uneven tyre damage and can also increase fuel consumption. Over inflated pressure can give a less comfortable ride and increased wear in the centre of the tread. Also, always remember to check your spare tyres pressure. You never know when you might need it.

Check Your Tyres Treads
If the tyres are worn then the tyre will have less grip on the road. Uneven wear can often be an indication of other defects on the vehicle. In these circumstances, the steering wheel, wheel alignment and brakes should also be c checked.
Check wheel alignment
If the wheel alignment is out this will effect the handling and safety of your vehicle. It can also lead to uneven tyre wear. It is essential to have the wheel alignment checked regularly as even a small amount out can lead to bigger things and further damage.
Check Wheel balance
Unbalanced wheels can lead to an uncomfortable ride and put pressure on other parts on the car which could end up being pricey. Unbalanced wheels can often go unnoticed by the driver as good suspension systems can be very effective at dampening out any vibrations. Even a little vibration is worth acting on just to be sure as unbalanced tyres will cause uneven damage to the tread.
UK Tyre law
The legal minimum tread depth for car tyres within the UK is 1.6mm throughout a continuous band comprising the central three quarters of the breadth of tread and around the whole of the tyre. Most car tyre types have tread wear indicators which are small ribs across the bottom of the main tread grooves. When the surface becomes level with these ribs, the tyre is at its legal limit and needs to be replaced.
The 1.6mm legal limit applies to:
Cars and vehicle with upto 8 seated passengers – not including the driver
Motor vehicles and light trailers (including caravans) up to 3500kg gross vehicle weight
